The Hallowell City Council and residents are now in a position to advise and influence the future sale of the Stevens School Complex in Hallowell, Maine. The Stevens/Reed Center Blog allows participants to weigh in on how Hallowell's Comprehensive Plan will provide the city and its residents with input and perhaps influence future uses of the property.
REED NATURE CENTER OPENS WITH DEDICATION CEREMONY --
ReplyDeleteFormer Governor John H. Reed, his family, state government representatives, and Hallowell's mayor and city council attended a dedication ceremony on Wednesday, July 18, 2011. The former Stevens School Gymnasium will serve two functions. It will house Nature Center staff responsible for the 35 acres of land that have been set aside for community garderns and walking paths for all to enjoy. In addition, the gymnasium has been transformed into a performance center for educational programs and the performing arts.

ReplyDeleteWith permits in hand, ABC Development Corporation will begin demolition of four buildings at the Stevens School Complex to make way for a nursing home.
HALLOWELL ACADEMY CELEBRATES ITS FIRST GRADUATION --
ReplyDeleteFive years afters its inception, the Hallowell Academy for Creativity and Performing Arts graduated its first class. The Academy serves as Maine's Charter School for the Performing Arts and offers certificate programs for adults.
MARTHA BALLARD BIRTHING CENTER CELEBRATES FIFTH YEAR --
ReplyDeleteStaff and clients gathered on Sunday August 17 to celebrate the fifth year of services rendered by the Ballard Birthing Center. The Center is affiliated with the Stevens School Family Medical Clinic.
CHILD CARE RETURNS TO THE STEVENS SCHOOL --
ReplyDeleteThe Snoopy School was the last child care program offered at the Stevens School. In the late 60's, the Stevens School offered child care through its home economics program. Today, Creative Play organized by the Hallowell Child Care Collaborative opened its doors to offer child care services to Hallowell families.

WELLNESS CENTER PLANS UNVEILED --
ReplyDeleteThe Hallowell Wellness Cooperative unveiled plans today to establish a Wellness Center at the Stevens School. The Wellness Center will provide exercise programs, educational programs, and discussions groups focusing on wellness and healthy living.
THE RIVERVIEW HILL TOP CAFE OPENS --
ReplyDeleteThe Riverview Hill Top Diner opens today. With a view of the Kennebec River, patrons will enjoy early morning breakfasts and lunch to 2:00 pm. Wi-Fi will be available for guests. From 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm will serve specialty coffees and teas with dessert.
SPECIALS PROGRAMS OFFERED FOR SENIOR CITIZENS --
ReplyDeleteThe Planning Comittee of the Stevens School Cooperative is working to create programming for senior citizens. In collaboration with the Hallowell Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, the organizations at the Stevens School and other community based organization, the planning committee will schedule educational programs and events.
HALLOWELL ORGANIC GARDENERS COOPERATIVE SEEKS MEMBERS --
ReplyDeleteThe newly formed Hallowell Organic Gardeners Cooperative seeks members to raise vegetable and flower gardens at the Reed Nature Center. Three acres have been set aside for gardens.
COURTESY VAN TO DOWNTOWN HALLOWELL --
ReplyDeleteHallowell Academy and the Stevens School Cooperative announced today that a courtesy van will shuttle students and others between the Stevens School and downtown. The shuttle van will operate on the hour beginning at 10:00 a.m. with the last ride from downtown at 5:30 p.m.
INN WITH SMALL CONFERENCE CENTER PLANNED FOR THE STEVENS SCHOOL.
ReplyDeleteA 30-Room inn and Conference Center is being planned for the Stevens School Complex. Kennebec Builders, Inc. announced today that work will begin on the hotel and conference center in the spring of 2011. The hotel and conference center will work with local restaurants and businesses to cater food and other related services.
CONCERT FOR THE HALLOWELL FOOD BANK SCHEDULED --
ReplyDeleteA concert featuring local musicians, and students from Halldale High School and the Hallowell Academy will be held on October 18th at the Performance Hall at the Reed Nature Center. Tickets are $15.00 for adults and $7.00 for students. After expenses, all proceeds will be donated to the Hallowell Food Bank.
TEN AFFORDABLE HOUSES DESIGNED FOR THE STEVENS SCHOOL COMPLEX --
ReplyDeleteTen affordable houses will be built on the Stevens School complex. Positioned above existing buildings, ten homes with small footprints will be built. Through a RFP process, the Hallowell City Council will work with local contractors to bring the affordable building concept to a reality.
