The Hallowell City Council and residents are now in a position to advise and influence the future sale of the Stevens School Complex in Hallowell, Maine. The Stevens/Reed Center Blog allows participants to weigh in on how Hallowell's Comprehensive Plan will provide the city and its residents with input and perhaps influence future uses of the property.

Stevens School -- Smaller Upper Field
On the Stevens School property there are two fields that are located on the upper campus. The fields are somewhat isolated and positioned on top of the hill on the left side of the property as you view the Stevens campus from Winthrop Street. There is a chained access road behind the building that houses the Maine Human Rights Commission. The larger field has been hayed over the years and there is no tree growth. The smaller field has not been maintained. As you view the slideshow, you will see the trees that are beginning to fill in the smaller field. The third field on the Stevens Campus is located behind the Reed Center. This field can also be viewed from Pleasant Street.

Greetings from Pleasant Street!
Recent postings to The Stevens School Blog present information from the Stevens School Re-Use Analysis Report. The postings provide you with environmental issues, the three re-use options considered by the Committee, and the Committee's final recommendations. A key phrase used in this report identifies the standard for re-use as being "the highest and best use." This statement leads me to a firm belief that as Hallowell residents we must step up and become the Stevens School stewards. Through our stewardship, we can transform the Stevens School property to its highest and best use. I am convinced that we can do this. However, as residents, we need to step up and become visible and vocal to ensure that the Stevens School property will become a destination for Hallowell residents and others -- a destination that benefits our community and ensures positive results for our residents.
The purpose of the blog is to encourage open discussion and to reduce any misconceptions regarding the development of this property.
You are encouraged to vote and to share your concerns.

Would you consider selling the entire Stevens School property to a developer without restrictions (except for re-use guidelines) "the highest and best use" of the property?
Should the City of Hallowell Purchase the Stevens School Property?

- In 1988 I was diagnosed with 4th stage lymphoma. After a major operation that took four hours, I recovered and then started my first chemotherapy treatment. While I was receiving my chemo, Nona, my wife, overheard three women talking about their attendance at a local HOPE Group in Portland. She spoke with the three women and as a result we started to attend H.O.P.E. Groups guided by Kenneth H. Hamilton, MD. The HOPE Groups and Ken's guided imageries played a major role in my healing and how I viewed life. We were friends with Ken until he passed away in 2022. A week before his death he challenged me to move his work further into the 21st century. I accepted the challenge!
I firmly believe that the City of Hallowell and its residents need to become stewards of the Stevens School property. Therefore, I voted yes. We need to ensure that development at this property matches the spirit and character of Hallowell. We need to protect our environment and promote development that maintains open space, reasonably protects the integrity and safety of existing neighborhoods, and integrate the Stevens School into the vision of creating Hallowell as a destination for varied purposes.
ReplyDeleteI voted "Not Sure" because I am still trying to get an understanding of the pros and cons of both options. I really appreciate this blog putting all this information in one place. It will certainly help me come to an informed opinion.
